Gulf Coast Equality Fest 2024

A Powerful Celebration of Unity

Biloxi, MS – The Gulf Coast Equality Fest took place at Harrah’s Gulf Coast Great Lawn on October 19, 2024. This significant event, which began in 2017, has grown over the past seven years to become an important occasion on the Coast. Although Mississippi is not historically known for unity and change, the state is gradually evolving for the better. Progress requires people to stand up for their beliefs, even when it seems impossible. Everyone has something they are willing to sacrifice for, whether it’s family, country, or, in this case, equality. This year’s theme, “One Community,” resonates deeply with the United States’ motto, “E Pluribus Unum,” Latin for “Out of Many, One.” As someone who loves America, this theme struck a chord.

Political Engagement and Challenges

My schedule stays busy, tagging about 20 elected officials for events I consider politically important. Unfortunately, many replied with “Will Not Be Attending.” It’s disheartening because all voters deserve representation from their officials. Knowing they wouldn’t come didn’t deter me; it is my duty to highlight significant community events that I feel are important for them to be part of. Some officials said attending would be “political suicide,” but I can’t let my political party’s opinions dictate my actions. More than party politics, what the people of Mississippi think of me matters. Honesty about my morals and ethics comes before party loyalty.

Notable Attendees and Community Interaction

Among the attendees was Michael McGill, who attended the event with his son. Dressed like a political figure, McGill stood out. It would be easy to assume that he was the only Republican to have ever set foot at this event. Despite this, he engaged with the festival’s offerings, listening to the band on stage and visiting tents that provided information on different programs. My son and I received curious looks from various attendees, which is understandable. This community is cautious and wants to understand everyone’s intentions. My goal was to better understand the event and show that I care about all Mississippians, whether they are Republican or LGBTQ+. Being an advocate for human and civil rights means showing up at these events and proving that commitment.

Resources and Support

The festival featured dozens of tents, each providing resources for the LGBTQ+ community. From political groups to nonprofit organizations, their mission was clear: “You have options and are not alone in whatever fight you think you are in.” I have learned through Soldiers and friends who are part of the LGBTQ+ community that it’s not my job to understand it all, but it is my job to support them. I don’t think I will ever fully understand it, and I don’t think anyone ever will, but as long as they are voters and citizens of Mississippi, it is my duty to protect their life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

The Gulf Coast Equality Fest 2024 was a powerful reminder of the importance of unity and the ongoing efforts to build a society where everyone can live openly and authentically. Events like these remind us that progress, though slow, is possible when people stand up for what they believe in. The festival’s theme, “One Community,” resonated deeply, emphasizing the importance of coming together despite our differences. As we continue to strive for a more inclusive society, it’s crucial to support and advocate for all members of our community. The dedication and commitment shown by the organizers, participants, and attendees of this event are a beacon of hope for a future where everyone can live openly and authentically.
